TRL Calling it Quits

After years of entertaining the world from a glass walled room overlooking Time Square, TRL is now calling it quits. The once iconic music video countdown show held their final show Sunday night. Caffeine Benefits Skin

Caffeine can do more then just wake you up in the morning. A new study shows that “caffeine might help inhibit, and possibly even reverse, damage to skin caused by the sun.” However, don’t start downing excessive cups of Starbucks thinking that you’re preventing skin cancer. For the caffeine to have an impact, it has to be applied topically. When caffeine is applied directly to damaged skin it “blocked pre-cancerous cells from dividing and becoming skin cancer.” In the future, be on the lookout for caffeine to be included in skin products like lotions, moisturizers and sunscreens.

Don’t Forget to Wash Those Hands

This message is especially for the ladies. “A new study found that women have a greater variety of bacteria on their hands than men do.” Researchers aren't sure why women harbor a greater variety of bacteria than men, but they think it may have to do with the acidity of the skin. This is a possibility because men generally have more acidic skin than women. Other possibilities could include “differences in sweat and oil gland production between men and women, the frequency of moisturizer or cosmetics applications, skin thickness or hormone production.”

Stem Cells

Stem cells are being found in places scientists once thought was impossible. Recent research from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet reveals completely new properties of the skin’s stem cells. “The stem cells don’t behave at all in the way we’d previously thought, and are found in unexpected places”, says Professor Rune ToftgÃ¥rd, one of the scientists at Karolinska Institutet responsible for the study.

“The stem cells examined by the present study are found in the skin’s hair follicles, around which the cells are able to move depending on their stage of growth. The scientists believe that their growth is governed by previously known mechanism called Hedgehog signaling.”

Beauty Spending

What’s more important to you…food or beauty? “According to a British e-tailer, one-third of women in the U.K. would prefer to eat less than cut their beauty spending.” With a recession looming, it’s interesting to note that although people deliberately cut back spending on almost everything they tend to not cut back their spending on beauty products and services. I guess that just shows people would rather be poor and beautiful than rich and ugly.
